AMIBA helps communities develop neighborhood-based, locally-owned enterprise in lieu of chain-dominated sprawl, with an emphasis on uniting independent business owners with other citizens to form powerful pro-local alliances.
The American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) is a 501c3 non-profit organization helping communities to launch and successfully operate programs to support community-based enterprise and entrepreneurism, build local wealth and prevent the displacement of independent businesses by major corporations. Since 2001, AMIBA has helped nearly 70 North American communities successfully launch Independent Business Alliances ans has helped developed effective "buy local" campaigns and other pro-local initiatives in many more. dozens more.
AMIBA encourages and provide training and support in three major realms:
1) Public education about the greater overall value local businesses often can provide as well as the vital economic, social and cultural role they play in the community.
2) Cooperative promotion, advertising, purchasing and other activities to help local businesses gain economies of scale and compete more effectively.
3) Creating a strong voice and advocacy group for local independent businesses in their local government and media while engaging citizens in guiding the future of their community. AMIBA provides a wide range of tools, templates and training to help local organizations, governments or activists advance economic localization and build vibrant, durable local economies.
