Google Earth is the web’s most comprehensive set of maps, images and geographic data with an interface that allows users to zoom into detailed satellite images of nearly every corner of the globe and to layer on their own datasets.
Google Earth displays satellite images of varying resolution of the Earth's surface, allowing users to see things like cities and houses at an oblique angle, or with perspective (bird's eye view). Google Earth also allows users to search for addresses, enter coordinates, or simply use the mouse to browse to a location.
For some parts of the surface of the Earth, 3D images of terrain and buildings are available, but for large parts, only 2D images exist from almost vertical photography. For its three dimensional analyses, Google Earth uses digital elevation model (DEM) data collected by NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), meaning that one can view the Grand Canyon or Mount Everest in three dimensions. 3D Renderings are also available for certain buildings and structures around the world via Google's 3D Warehouse and other websites.
Many people use the application to add their own data, making them available through various sources, such as the Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) or blogs. Google Earth can also be a powerful tool to gather data for use in town planning. For communities without access to GIS systems, Google Earth can meet some geographic mapping and analysis needs.
Google has recently added a host of features that allow users to monitor traffic speeds, view public transportation routes, and access an on the street level view in many locations via ‘Google Street View’, fully integrated into the program in April, 2008.
