The Coalition is a diverse network of organizations and professional practitioners in the field of dialogue and deliberation—one that works to foster collaborative learning within the field through conferences, communication, and resource sharing.
Formed in 2002, the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation (NCDD) serves to foster a “world of conversation, participation, and dialogue” where diverse audiences come together to discuss and make decisions about tough social, cultural, and economic issues. The original intent of the Coalition was to create partnerships among practitioners in the field of Dialogue and Deliberation, borne out of conferences where practitioners can meet and learn about each other’s models and strategies.
Conferences and events continue to be some of the most important offerings of NCDD. While NCDD has held a single, national Conference on Dialogue and Deliberation almost every other year since 2002, other years are reserved for hosting a number of smaller, regional, one-day events to move the work of the Coalition forward. These kinds of events and gatherings have lead to advancements in online networking and other projects.
One of NCDD’s projects is the development of the NCDD Resource Center. The Resource Center serves as a database of resources and tools of various practitioners in the field of dialogue and deliberation. Over 2,000 resources are summarized with web links.
In 2009, NCDD collaborated with IAP2 and the Co-Intelligence Institute to create the Seven Core Principles of Public Engagement, based on the input and feedback of practitioners in the field. These principles outline what NCDD supports as the groundwork for public engagement on any level.
There are many ways to become involved in the NCDD “Community;” becoming a member of the Coalition, subscribing to email discussion lists or announcement listservs, reading the blog, or participating in the NCDD Forum are all ways to take advantage of the connections and networks within the field of dialogue and deliberation.
