Open Space Technology is a system for facilitating group meetings. Open Space meetings allow participants to set the agenda, facilitate and record the sessions, and move around as they please.
Open Space Technology is a meeting facilitation tool that leaves the agenda and proceedings of meetings and conferences up to the participants. While a facilitator guides participants through the process, those who attend the meeting create the topics for sessions, run the discussions, take notes, and determine next steps.
In Open Space meetings, events and organizations, participants create and manage their own agenda of parallel working sessions around a central theme of strategic importance, such as: What is the strategy, group, organization or community that all stakeholders can support and work together to create?
A facilitator generally kicks the meeting off by talking about the concept and ground rules, then inviting people to suggest a session topic and a time and place to meet. Multiple sessions will happen at once, and participants are free to move about between them. Each group facilitates its own session, starts and ends when it is ready. All groups typically come back together to report out and share closing reflections.
With groups of 5 to 2000+ people -- working in one-day workshops, three-day conferences, or the regular weekly staff meeting -- the common result is an effective connecting and strengthening of what's already happening in the organization: planning and action, learning and doing, passion and responsibility, participation and performance.
