Smart Growth is based on a set of general principles, which include mixing land uses, creating walkable neighborhoods, and taking advantage of compact building design.
Besides publishing a variety of books and guides, APA collected papers prepared for their project, Growing Smart, which cover specific topics relating to Smart Growth issues, producing two volumes of Modernizing State Planning Statutes: The Growing Smart Working Papers. Examples of topics include “interlocal approaches to land-use decision-making,” benchmarking, and “state and regional fair-share housing planning.” The papers intend to explore modern visions of model planning and zoning legislation. Growing Smart’s Legislative Guidebook, also an APA publication, is the culmination and result of these working papers—a guide built specifically to arm legislators with the practical tools needed to make smart development and zoning decisions and legislation.
