Published twice annually, this online journal of the built and natural environments features literary, technical, journalistic and artistic works of varying styles surveying planning issues, ecology, and other issues relating to land and landscapes.
Terrain.org, an online journal run out of Arizona, is “searching for that interface—the integration—among the built and natural environments, that might be called the soul of place.” Through its biannual issue publications, and an international lens, Terrain.org aims to celebrate the symbiosis that sometimes exists between the natural and built worlds, and to critically examine those instances where it does not.
Each journal issue is an eclectic and well-rounded collection of everything from journalistic and technical articles to digital art galleries to at least one interview of an influential leader, author, or change-maker. Articles review interesting news stories or developments in such fields as ecology, climate and energy, and government, planning and their relationship to one another.
These articles, as well as editorial columns and a case study of a city’s or town’s development, present information with an aim to help communities develop more sustainably. Featured poetry, fiction, essays, and visual art seek to inspire readers and help them reflect on place.
