Yellow Wood Association’s You Get What You Measure Program applies a values-based process to real-world planning. Developed by a small business consulting firm, the program typically works with rural communities.
The You Get What You Measure Program is a facilitated group planning process that helps communities develop goals and the associated indicators to create positive change. By developing a measuring process that ties actions closely with goals, the program allows participants to see evidence of progress. The program has been used by a variety of national, regional and multi-state community-focused organizations across the country.
As described in the manual, there are 5 essential steps to the program that encourage foster a creative, value-driven process that directs action toward specific, measurable goals.
1. Define goals. Goals are not actions. Goals are a condition you want to achieve, a state of being.
2. Develop indicators of progress for identified goals.
3. Conduct indicator analysis. Determine the indicators with the greatest impact on the goals to identify key leverage indicators.
4. Develop measures for each indicator.
5. Take action!
Yellow Wood Associates offers the program in a variety of formats, including:
• A Taste of Measurement - An overview of the measurement process (1-3 hrs)
• Introduction to YGWYM - A full day immersion in the measurement process
• YGWYM Modules - Five introductory modules to the measurement process (1-2 hrs each)
• YGWYM in Use - Organizations learn the measurement process while applying it to their issues (2 days)
