Canada's Rural Partnership (CRP) was launched by the Rural Secretariat in 1998 with the goal of supporting rural communities with information, tools, and services that build community capacity to adapt and respond to changes and new challenges.
Targeting community leaders in the fields of community development and social change, CRP’s Community Decision-Making Toolkit provides a collection of consensus-building and decision-making tools and examples of how to use them. The website welcomes submissions of community success stories, and as such has a growing database of case studies and recommended tools and methods shared by real Canadian rural communities.
Featured tools include commonly-highlighted planning tools such as asset mapping, SWOT analysis, and community dialogue as well as more unique tools such as “dotmacracy” and “nominal group technique,” both prioritization tools.
Recommended, innovative tools submitted by various Canadian rural communities reveal how specific and diverse the needs of communities can be; examples range from the development of a local internet television website to hiring a “Graphic Recorder” to highlight community planning decisions. Case studies also reveal the many ways that the same tools might be used in different communities.
