Through research, conflict- and problem-mapping, discussion facilitation, training, and evaluation, the Consensus Building Institute helps communities and organizations to make complex decisions collectively and using consensus-building techniques.
The Consensus Building Institute (CBI) has worked with dozens of partners, including major corporations, government agencies, local and regional organizations, international groups, non-profits and educational institutions. CBI’s project work focuses on all phases of disputes and conflict resolution. This includes identifying and mapping the problem, engaging stakeholders and facilitating discussions, developing alternatives, providing training in consensus-building techniques, and evaluating success. CBI also conducts research in the field, produces publications and reports, and works to expand the field of participatory decision-making.
One of CBI’s more interesting training methods is to develop simulations around a particular conflict or planning need, which help clients to practice negotiation skills in realistic situations. In addition, CBI uses more typical consensus-building techniques like community discussions, role-playing, and negotiation techniques.
