CITYgreen

Summary

A Geographic Information System (GIS) software program for mapping, measuring, and analyzing the storm water, summer energy savings, carbon storage and sequestration, air quality, and wildlife of urban ecosystems.

Tool Description

CITYgreen is GIS (Geographic Information System) software that is an extension to the ESRI’s (Environmental Systems Research Institute) ArcGIS. The program considers trees and other natural resources in the community development process and allows users to create ecological maps, conduct technical analysis of the ecology, summarize results, and create graphic presentation materials. The software also calculates dollar benefits for the services provided by the trees and other green space in your specific area.

CITYgreen analyzes the ecological and economic benefits of tree canopy and other green space based on a landcover dataset that is provided by the user. The source of the landcover dataset can be derived from a variety of sources, such as aerial photography or satellite imagery.

All CITYgreen releases analyze the following:

  • Stormwater Runoff
  • Air Pollution Removal
  • Carbon Storage and Sequestration
  • Landcover Breakdown
  • Alternate Scenario Modeling

Summary of Costs

The CITYgreen software is available for sale on the American Forests webpage with non-profit and educational packages from $195.00 and government and commercial licenses currently set at $895.00. American Forests also offers CITYgreen training for an additional fee.

Strengths

  • CITYgreen software can provide complex ecological analyses for presentation use in the planning process.
  • The software may help communities determine what elcological steps need to be taken to reach sustainable status.

Limitations

  • The program works only with Windows-based PCs that have ArcGIS installed. It is not a stand-alone software package.
  • Uploaded images must by in color with a 4 meter or better resolution before CITYgreen can analyze the data.
  • CITYgreen is not an image-processing application and for larger areas, automated image processing tools are needed such as Erdas IMAGINE, eCognition or Feature Analyst.

Applications

  • Data analysis and collection
  • Scenario planning

Hello, Eugenio

My name is Dr Shingo Takeda, a biogeographer, working at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji.

I also have the same problem. I also have not been able to reach the link (American Forest) where CITYgreen software can be either downlodable (?) or purchased.

My questions are have you got a reply from the distributor (Ameican Forest) since? If you have, what are their advices?

I would appriciate it if you could get back to me on this.

Best regards,

Shingo
