The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) develops art and design initiatives to enhance public engagement in neighborhoods and communities, creating visual education resources to aid locals in understanding the landscapes of their homes.
To increase public participation in community planning efforts, the Center for Urban Pedagogy utilizes visual education tools to help people understand the policy and planning issues underlying their neighborhoods. By un-clouding the processes behind community planning, CUP aims to increase public participation in this traditionally top-down practice.
Collaborating between artists and designers, community organizers, and policy makers, CUP breaks down complex community issues into easier-to-understand visual components. These explanations help the public understand the process and encourage more involvement. Through workshops, publications, and teaching resources, CUP provides communities with the material to understand their planning agenda, focusing specifically on the envisioning and public policy portions. CUP also works with schools and youth organizations to provide children with experiential learning about their communities. Various student projects include exhibitions, documentaries, and publications exploring the issues behind communities and neighborhoods.
